my hand-painted books
consider these pieces a special, perhaps quirky, edition to my available fine art works.
i most prefer cotton rag when painting with watercolours- but, there’s no way i was going to teach myself how to paint & not decorate the edges of harry potter books…

i’m an early 90’s baby that grew up at hogwarts- waiting outside QBD books for J.K.’s next piece of magic. so naturally i now have a big hp size hole in my heart & I’m going to fill it with painted novels ♡
& i still read the whole series every year.

is it really all watercolour?
Pretty much! Usually I will add a bit of gouache at the end for the highlights & final details
does the paint seep onto the pages?
Nope 🙂 I haven’t had it happen yet. Before I start painting I clamp down the pages in my book press tight enough the make sure they stay safe.
will the paint fade, smudge or rub off, over-time?
I spray the finished paintings with a fixative & light varnish, so it shouldn’t. Nevertheless, I’d still do my best to minimise handling & sun exposure.
how to best care for this collectors item-
I recommend keeping your book as a display-only item- keep in somewhere safe from dust & out of direct sunlight. Something like a display case is ideal. Cotton gloves should be worn whenever handling. If you like, you can spray with a very light varnish every few years- be sure to read the instructs of the varnish you’re using.
- carefully hand-painted collectors items, intended for display use
- a one-of-a kind treasure...there won't be another like it
- please keep out of direct sunlight to preserve colours
- please wear cotton gloves if handling
- if you like, you can spray with a light varnish that is NOT water-based.
